Fred Reid Hiers, Bamberg, SC

Fred Reid Hiers, 85, of Bamberg, S.C. went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Monday, May 15, 2017. He was blessed to be at home with his daughters by his side.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May18, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Bamberg, with visitation at 10 a.m. and burial immediately following at Olar First Baptist cemetery.

Born in Olar, S.C. to Fred L. and Rosalie R. Hiers, he was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. The oldest of five siblings, he attended Clemson University to study Electrical Engineering, and was a dedicated Tiger fan.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1991 as a city mail carrier, and also worked as a mechanic, truck driver, welder, and small engine repairman. He was also a retired volunteer fireman with the Bamberg Fire Department, a Mason, and a Shriner.

A member of First Baptist Church in Bamberg, one of his greatest joys was the wheelchair ramp building ministry that allowed him to reach out to others and help in some small way. He enjoyed the blessing of serving God through helping others, and gladly shared his knowledge and talents to expand this ministry. He also enjoyed working with Trinity United Methodist Church and the Salkehatchie Summer Service. He was a faithful worker every year he was able and shared his tools and knowledge freely. He made many friends whom he looked forward to seeing every summer.

His survivors include two daughters, Nancy Hiers of Bamberg, and Sally (Jim) Hiers Satterfield of Walhalla, S.C. and two grandchildren, Anna and Bradley Satterfield, who were his absolute delight. He is also survived by a sister, Celeste (Kevin) Rinehart Galvin and a brother Dan (Julia) Reid, both of Florida and families.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Roselyn Hiers, and brother Laurie Danner Hiers, of Florida, and his wife, Carolyn R. Hiers.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Bamberg Ramp fund, Connie Maxwell Children's Home, or Carolina Children's Home.
