William Duncan Rhoad, III, Bamberg, SC

On Monday, November 5, 2018, William Duncan “Bill” Rhoad, III passed away at the age of 84.

Funeral services for Bill will be held at 12:00 noon Friday, November 9, 2018 at Church of Redeemer 1606 Russell Street Orangeburg, SC with the Rev. John Burwell officiating. Burial will follow at South End Cemetery in Bamberg.

Bill was born in Bamberg County, SC on February 14, 1934, to the late William Duncan Rhoad, Jr. and the late Katherine Free Rhoad Brabham.  Bill jokingly said that his birthday (February 14 – Valentine’s Day) was celebrated worldwide.                                                     

Bill’s childhood plan was to become a farmer.  He opted for law school after realizing what hard work farming was.  In 1958, Bill graduated law school at the University of South Carolina.  He returned to Bamberg, where he practiced law for over 60 years. Bill considered practicing law to be an honor and remained enthusiastic and passionate about the legal profession throughout his life.

Bill was the Director and Attorney for the Home Federal Savings and Loan for over 40 years.  He served his hometown through various organizations, including the Jaycees, Bamberg Chamber of Commerce, Edisto Electric Cooperative, and the SC House of Representatives.  Bill loved gardening and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his son William Duncan Rhoad “Billy” Rhoad, IV (Kathy) of Bamberg; daughter Elizabeth “Bett” Rhoad Myrick (Jim) of Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, Whitney Elizabeth Rhoad Davis (Nick), William Duncan Rhoad V, James Dunbar Myrick Jr., Sophie Joyner Myrick and Georgia Jaudon Myrick. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years Nancy Joyner Coates Rhoad and sister Katherine Rhoad Ness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
