Obituary

Betty Weatherly Maxwell, of Bamberg, passed peacefully from this life into paradise on the morning of April 18, 2025 after many years of declining health. She was supported by her loving family and devoted caregivers during her last days. Betty was born to Rufus and Rose Weatherly on January 29, 1931 in McColl, S.C. She attended the McColl public schools and Newberry College. At Newberry, she met the love of her life, Leon, and they were married until his death in 2012. They raised their family in Latta, St. Stephen, and Bamberg. Betty retired from the Bamberg school system after 25 years.

Betty lived a very active and meaningful life. She was a devoted coach's wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who never missed a game or dance recital. She most loved supporting Coach Maxwell on Friday nights during his 40 year coaching career. She and Leon had many close friends, who they loved to travel with and entertain for Gamecock football.

One of her passions was playing bridge with friends. Her favorite pastimes were shopping and finding lunch specials with her best friend, Virginia Kemp. They attended many auctions and estate sales together.

Betty was a very kind and generous person who loved to cook Sunday lunch for her family, often inviting friends, as well. Her kitchen was always open! In her later years, the highlight of her day was going to eat at Dot and Floyd's and Rusty and Paula's.

She was a very active and faithful church member throughout her life. She was an accomplished singer who sang in the church choir from her teen years through her 80s.

Betty was predeceased by her loving husband, Riley Leon Maxwell and her siblings, John Hugh Weatherly, Rufus Earl Weatherly and Sarah Weatherly Fletcher.

She is survived by her children, Richard Lee Maxwell (Carol), Randall Leon Maxwell (Mary Jane), Cynthia Maxwell Hall (Ray), and Ronald Quillian Maxwell (Kay); her grandchildren, Riley Johnson Maxwell, Richard Lee Maxwell, Jr. (Amy), Hank Morrell Maxwell (Sarah), Mary Bray Maxwell Mehrzad (Alan), Henry Maxwell Hall, Sarah Lou Hall, Matthews Webster Maxwell and Cornelia Weatherly Maxwell; and her great-grandchildren, Weatherly Marie Mehrzad, Harrison Claire Mehrzad, Lilian Annette Maxwell, Cora June Maxwell, Riggs Morrell Maxwell, Olsen Lee Maxwell, and Rioth Buist Maxwell.
